Today in our garden... discover some health secrets of activated charcoal!
Traditional healers have used it for thousands of years because of its many benefits. Active charcoal, or activated charcoal, or even activated vegetable charcoal, is a lightweight black powder made essentially of carbonaceous material with a porous structure. It is a type of wood charcoal that has a very large specific surface area, which gives it a strong adsorbing power.
Activated charcoal is said to have been used in antiquity by Hippocrates around 400 BC and even in Ancient Egypt around 1550 BC for medicinal purposes. In the 18th century, activated charcoal is said to have been used for the purification of liquids by filtration or sedimentation.
Ancient physicians used charcoal for various medical purposes, including the treatment of epilepsy and anthrax. In the early 20th century, medical journals began publishing research revealing that activated charcoal was an antidote to poisons and a way to improve intestinal disorders. Current research supports these earlier practices of activated charcoal and also introduces additional benefits to its use.
Hippocrates (400 BC) and Pliny (50 BC) recommended wood charcoal in the treatment of epilepsy, vertigo, chlorosis, and "charbon disease" (anthrax) contracted by tanners. In 1773, Scheele explained the phenomenon of gas absorption by charcoal. In 1785, Lowitz showed that charcoal is capable of decolorizing many liquids. In 1793, D.M. Kehls advised in his dissertation the use of charcoal to eliminate the odors of gangrene, to purify the breath, and for putrid fevers and all bilious states.
In 1813, a certain Bertrand, a French chemist, gave a public demonstration. He held a vial containing 5 g of arsenic trioxide (1 teaspoon), enough to kill 150 men. He raised his arm and brought the concoction to his lips. A few minutes later, he should have felt the inexorable effects of this drug: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, intense burning of the mouth and throat, agonizing cramps in the stomach, rapid dehydration, and death. Before the eyes of the stunned and horrified crowd, however, Bertrand went calmly about his business and showed no signs of distress.
In 1831, a pharmacist from Montpellier named Touéry performed the same trick, but this time before the French Academy of Medicine. He swallowed 1 g of strychnine (10 times the lethal dose). This poison kills a man in 10 minutes with uncontrollable convulsions and respiratory arrest. Yet, Touéry remained calm and relaxed. He showed no signs of distress, to the complete amazement of the professors. The secret? Bertrand and Touéry had both studied the action of vegetable charcoal on poisons and both wanted to demonstrate that they had discovered the universal antidote.

Wood charcoal binds to certain poisons, heavy metals, and other toxins and eliminates them from your body, making it a wonderful substance for acute and general detoxification.
The benefits of activated charcoal include general detoxification, digestive health, gas, bloating, heart health, and anti-aging.
In herbal medicine, it is used to:
- Capture toxins, relieve bloating and aerophagia
- Reduce waistline. Activated charcoal is a simple and effective recipe for a flat stomach.
- Act on diarrhea and other symptoms of gastroenteritis
- In case of toxemia (if you have a dull complexion, acne breakouts, a white tongue), you can use vegetable charcoal to drain your system.
What is toxemia then?
It is the presence of incompatible substances in the blood, lymph, body fluids, organs, tissues, and cells. This therefore brings us back to a notion of the body being saturated with toxemic overloads of various origins…
Just two grams of activated charcoal powder (4 coconut charcoal capsules) have roughly the same surface area as a football field. The porous surface has a negative electrical charge that attracts positively charged toxins and unwanted gases.
Toxins from poor-quality and processed foods, as well as environmental pollution, decrease your energy and contribute to brain fog and digestive issues. Chronic exposure to toxins causes cellular damage, allergic reactions, compromised immunity, and rapid aging. Regular use of activated charcoal can eliminate unwanted toxins from your body and allow you to feel renewed and more vibrant, often within minutes.
It is an anti-poison
Today, we have scientific proof that activated charcoal absorbs all poisons... For 10 years, more than 500 medical articles have offered more than 10,000 scientific references on the subject. Charcoal is probably the simplest, most effective, and cheapest decontamination agent we know.
Activated charcoal is effective against mercury, lead, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, and even certain radioactive substances. For 15 years, activated charcoal has been used to detoxify analgesics, antipyretics, tricyclic antidepressants, cardiotonic glycosides, organic solvents, most drugs with iatrogenic effects, and chemicals.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of poisons that can be eliminated by activated charcoal:
Narcotics;
Dangerous drugs;
Alkaloids;
Food additives;
Agricultural chemicals;
Heavy metals;
Toxic gases;
Detergents;
Organic solvents;
Chemotherapy;
Bacterial toxins;
Venoms;
Tuna histamine;
Mycotoxins found in food due to antibiotics;
Aflatoxins, etc…
It is an excellent anti-aging agent
Activated charcoal has powerful anti-aging properties, and studies show that it prevents many cellular changes associated with aging.
It slows down the rate of the brain's sensitivity to toxins as it ages, which improves cognitive function and also builds a better defense mechanism by improving the adaptive functioning of essential organs such as the liver, kidneys, and adrenal glands.
It allows for better heart health
Activated charcoal can also lower cholesterol levels.
In one study, patients with high cholesterol who took 8 grams of activated charcoal three times a day showed a 25% reduction in total cholesterol. They also reduced their LDL ("bad") cholesterol by 41% and their HDL ("good") cholesterol levels by 8%. Studies examining microscopic tissues show that a daily dose of activated charcoal can prevent abnormal hardening (sclerosis) of the heart and coronary blood vessels.
